Justice Beyond Punishment Pillars
After two years of learning and studying together, our Collaborative drafted these three pillars as a way to communicate our collective understanding of Justice Beyond Punishment, and what we believe is necessary to overcome state violence and fortify just approaches to interpersonal violence.
OUR Pillars
Mass incarceration and carceral punishment are forms of violence, often referred to as state violence
Mass incarceration and carceral punishment do not make us safer or prevent interpersonal violence. Instead, they promote interpersonal violence
We need to elevate and grow community specific and community based approaches to address interpersonal violence that prioritize safety, healing, and accountability.
Pillar 1: Mass incarceration and carceral punishment are forms of violence, often referred to as state violence
Mass incarceration and carceral punishment are state-permitted forms of violence intentionally designed to inflict physical and psychological suffering
Mass incarceration and carceral punishment are a continuation of colonization, chattel slavery, and white supremacy intended to subjugate specific groups of people, in particular Black and Indigenous people, poor people, and queer and trans people. They were created to destroy and criminalize spiritual/cultural practices of Black and Indigenous communities and continue to do so today
Mass incarceration and carceral punishment have been central to criminalizing and punishing social movements, for Black liberation in particular, and resistance to state violence (from Black Panthers to Cop City)
The prison industrial complex has created a whole industry that profits from the violence enacted upon criminalized and incarcerated people and communities
Mass incarceration and carceral punishment perpetuate sexual and gender violence
Carceral punishment is designed to punish and strip people of their dignity from arrest to reentry
